Hot tub wiring in Ontario: what to know before delivery day

Hot tub electrical installation in Ontario: dedicated circuits, the disconnect, GFCI protection, bonding, permits and how to plan around delivery day.

Key takeaways

  • Most hot tubs need a dedicated 240 V circuit sized to the model's specifications.
  • The code requires a disconnect within sight of the tub, kept at least 1.5 m from it, and GFCI protection.
  • Book the electrician before delivery so the tub can run the day it arrives.

A hot tub is one of the best additions to a Niagara backyard, and one of the most electrically demanding. Water and electricity need careful handling, and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code has specific rules for hot tubs and spas. Here is what to know.

Plug-and-play versus hardwired tubs

Some small tubs plug into a standard 120 V outlet, which still needs to be a properly protected outdoor receptacle on a suitable circuit. Most full-size tubs are hardwired to a dedicated 240 V circuit. The manufacturer's installation guide lists the required circuit size.

What the installation includes

  • A dedicated circuit from your panel, sized to the tub
  • A disconnect within sight of the tub so it can be shut off for service. ESA guidance requires it to be at least 1.5 m from the inside walls of the tub unless separated by a permanent barrier.
  • GFCI protection for the tub and for nearby receptacles and equipment. See GFCI outlets.
  • Bonding of metal parts as the code requires
  • Proper wiring methods for the route, including underground runs

Check your panel first

A hot tub is a large load. Many homes have room for it, but older or smaller services may need a panel or service upgrade. We check this during the site visit.

Plan around delivery day

  1. Choose the tub and get the electrical specifications from the dealer
  2. Book a site visit to plan the route and check capacity
  3. Prepare the pad or deck
  4. Install the circuit and disconnect before delivery
  5. Connect the tub once it is in place, then complete the ESA inspection

Pools too

Pool pumps, heaters and lighting have similar rules for circuits, GFCI protection and bonding. We wire pools and backyard equipment as well.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to wire a hot tub in Ontario?

Yes. Hot tub wiring requires an ESA notification and inspection, which a licensed contractor files.

How far does the hot tub disconnect need to be?

ESA guidance requires the disconnect to be within sight of the tub and at least 1.5 m from its inside walls, unless there is a permanent barrier. Your electrician will place it to meet the code.
