Quotes and pricing
How do you price an electrical job?
We price every job after a visit to your site. The quote reflects the scope of work, the materials, the permit and the conditions we see in person, so you get a clear number instead of a rough guess.
Why do you need to visit before giving a quote?
Two jobs that sound the same on the phone can be very different on site. The age of the wiring, the capacity of the panel, access and the layout of the space all change the work. Seeing it first means an accurate quote and no surprises once the job starts.
What should I have ready for the site visit?
A list of what you want done is a great start. For renovations and new construction, drawings, builder plans and your expected schedule help us quote accurately. For repairs, note when the problem happens and what was running at the time.
Permits and safety
Do I need a permit for electrical work in Ontario?
Most electrical work in Ontario requires a notification of work, often called a permit, with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). As a licensed electrical contractor, FM Electric takes out the permit and arranges the ESA inspection for any work that requires one.
How can I check that an electrician is licensed?
In Ontario, anyone you hire to do electrical work must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor with the ESA. You can confirm any licence number with the ESA's online contractor lookup. FM Electric's ESA licence number is 7011961.
What is a Master Electrician?
A Master Electrician in Ontario has passed a provincial exam on the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and the regulations that govern electrical work, and is responsible for the electrical work carried out by a licensed contractor. Fred Monfils holds Master Electrician licence 6015284.
What are the warning signs of an electrical problem?
Flickering or dimming lights, outlets or switch plates that feel warm, breakers that trip often, buzzing from the panel, burning smells and scorch marks are all warning signs. Stop using the affected circuit and call a licensed electrician. If you smell burning or see smoke, leave the building and call 911.
Commercial projects
What commercial electrical work do you do?
Tenant fit-outs, renovations, new commercial construction, LED lighting retrofits, panel and service upgrades, three-phase power, equipment wiring, emergency and exit lighting, and exterior and parking lot lighting for businesses across Niagara.
Can you plan the work around our business hours?
We talk through your schedule during the site visit and plan the work to keep disruption to your staff and customers as low as possible.
Do you work with general contractors and property managers?
Yes. We work directly with business owners, property managers and general contractors on fit-outs, renovations and new commercial builds.
New homes
Do you wire newly built homes?
Yes. New construction is one of our specialties. We handle the full electrical scope of a new home, from the service and rough-in to devices, fixtures and the final ESA inspection.
When should I bring an electrician into a new build?
As early as you can. Settling the electrical plan before framing is finished makes it easy to put outlets, lighting, network and EV charger circuits exactly where you want them.
Can you add an EV charger circuit during construction?
Yes, and it is the most cost-effective time to do it. Running the circuit during the build avoids opening finished walls later on.
